Hetlinger Schanze, Elbmarsch and Willkommhöft

Only a good fifteen minutes by car from the Jacob, you can immerse yourself in the endless expanse of the Wedel Marsh. The Hetlinger Schanze invites you to take endless walks on the dyke - with almost unlimited views over the Elbe and the marsh. The Hetlinger Strand beach is particularly popular. In the middle of the Haseldorfer Binnenelbe nature reserve with foreland is picturesque - willow tunnels, rare plants and freshwater reefs characterize the picture.

Hetlingen ski jump

The Hetlinger Schanze itself is a historical site. In the 17th century, the Danish King Christian V commissioned the construction of a field entrenchment with four bulwarks. The redoubt lost its importance in the 18th century.

You can hardly miss the Hetlinger Schanze on your approach - after all, it is also the site of the highest electricity pylons in Europe. To ensure a clearance height of no less than 75 m on the Elbe, the pylons at the Elbe crossing are an impressive 189 and 227 m high!

From Hetlingen, the pretty village of Haseldorf with its pretty thatched cottages nestling against the dyke. The route via the Eckhorst road and the Hetlingen dyke is wonderfully idyllic! The right area for a real country trip.

The garden of old fruit varieties in pretty Haseldorf

From July to November, the Haseldorf orchard is all about a warm welcome and bon appétit! Take a stroll through the orchard and enjoy - and discover fruit varieties that have almost been forgotten elsewhere. As one of the largest publicly accessible collections of old fruit varieties, the garden is home to 180 old, local varieties of apples, plums and pears that are no longer on the market. These include such famous varieties as the "Seestermühler Zitronenapfel", "Krügers Dickstiel" and "Purpurroter Cousinot". A visit in autumn is particularly attractive during the apple harvest - when apple lovers can discover that apples can offer much more flavor than the usual supermarket offerings would suggest.

The garden is signposted at Haseldorfer Hafen and is freely accessible at all times.

Willkommhöft ship welcome facility - the wide world as a guest in Hamburg

Anyone riding an e-bike from Jacob to Hetlinger Schanze will also pass the unique Willkomm Höft ship welcoming station.

Since 1952, all ships entering and leaving the port of Hamburg have been welcomed and bid farewell here by lowering the Hamburg flag and hoisting the international flag signal for "Gute Reise" with the letters "U" and "W".

Between 8 a.m. and sunset (or 8 p.m.), the national anthem of the respective home country is also played for ships over 1000 gross tons leaving German waters.

Visitors are briefly informed about the respective ship via loudspeaker: Name, nationality, year of construction, shipping company and shipyard as well as length, width and draught are mentioned. The welcoming and farewell ceremony is performed by a team of 5 retired captains and is very popular. In normal times, around 50 ships pass the facility every day.

While enjoying a snack in the Schulauer Fährhaus, you can get a taste of the wide world and think about life at sea and the countries to which the ships set sail.

Of course you can also reach Willkommhöft by car - in Wedel am Roland simply follow the signs to the harbor. The address for your navigation system is Parnaßstraße 29, 22880 Wedel.
