Welcome

Piano recital with Víkingur Ólafsson

Our Elbphilharmonie arrangements combine artistic masterpieces with a unique supporting program full of exclusive highlights created just for you. On November 18, 2025, you will experience your personal moment of brilliance in the Elbphilharmonie.

Cleverly conceived and extraordinary programs are Víkingur Ólafsson's trademark. Whether he brings Bach into conversation with Kurtág, Debussy with Rameau - or simply plays Bach's Goldberg Variations exclusively for a season: When the Icelander sits at the piano, you can be sure to discover new things and hear old familiar ones in a completely new way. The focus of his current solo program is Ludwig van Beethoven's late E major Sonata op. 109 - a work that still puzzles the music world today. Is the beautiful and harmonious composition a secret declaration of love, perhaps even to its dedicatee Maximiliane Brentano? It remains to be seen whether Víkingur Ólafsson will provide the answer to this question: In any case, in combination with other works by Beethoven, Schubert and Bach, he once again opens up an exciting cosmos of sound that allows us to hear this central work in a completely new way.
