Heading downstream along the Elbe, the wide Elbe Cycle Route takes you parallel to the riverbank, past the sailing clubs of the upmarket Elbe suburb of Blankenese: Just below Hirschpark (which actually has a large deer enclosure), you’ll pass the Mühlenberger Sailing Club – the western Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts who like to pop out onto the Elbe in their boats for a quick spin after work. A little further on, you’ll reach Strandweg. This is where the famous Treppenviertel begins.

The route continues along the riverbank to Wittenbergen, the next landmark. In summer, people enjoy a spot of splashing about in the Elbe there, but watch out! The undertow created by the large container ships is easily underestimated, and the force of the river is immense.

First, you’ll pass the Teufelsbrück ferry terminal, stately villas and, on your right, the harbour. You’ll then reach Övelgönne and the little captains’ cottages.

From the Övelgönner Museum Harbour, you cycle along Alte Elbstraße, briefly on cobblestones, passing the Altona cruise terminal and, shortly afterwards, the fish market with its fish auction hall.

Elbphilharmonie

The route then continues along the wide cycle path towards the Elbphilharmonie. On the right, you can admire Blohm & Voss’s largest floating dock, and on the left, the remnants of the turbulent squatter era of the 1990s: the Hafenstraße houses. A few hundred metres further on, you’ll reach the Landungsbrücken – the starting point for countless harbour tours. With a view of the Elbphilharmonie’s reflective façade, the route then continues towards HafenCity.

The tour takes you through tranquil woodlands, over hills and through valleys, and past stunning viewpoints – you’ll soon forget that you’re in the heart of a major city. Along the way, there’s plenty of time to take photos, gaze into the distance and ask any questions you may have. You’ll stop for a short break to enjoy a light snack and recharge your batteries for the rest of the route.

Port Discovery Tour

Immerse yourself in a world usually reserved for dockworkers. From the harbour’s edge to beneath the River Elbe, along the waterfront and amongst the greenery, you’ll experience all facets of the harbour from a wide variety of perspectives. Your tour guide knows the port like no other and will take you on a journey through its history, its container logistics and the unique features that have made it what it is today. The tour includes a ferry ride and a journey through the old Elbe Tunnel. Duration : approx. 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Altes Land Tour

Set against a backdrop of coastal scenery, idyllic half-timbered villages and orchards, this tour takes you through the Alte Land – past ornate half-timbered houses with richly decorated ‘bride’s doors’ and fruit trees stretching as far as the eye can see. Along the way, there’s plenty of time to take photos, enjoy the views over dykes and canals, and ask any questions you may have. You’ll stop for a short break to rest and refuel for the rest of the journey. Duration: 5.5 to 6.5 hours. Distance: approx. 40 kilometres.
